at entrópica we collect buildings that learn from their climate, not just our own. los cerros, by emase arquitectura, is one of those.
it is a representative office building in madrid that integrates environmental thinking into modern design rather than retrofitting it as a certificate. the result is a workspace with an operational energy demand of around 10 kwh / m² / year — an order of magnitude below most spanish office stock, and a useful benchmark to keep in mind when we are designing in our own continental-tropical context.
a few things worth noting in their approach:
- envelope first. mass and insulation are sized for the mediterranean swing between hot summers and cold winters, before mechanical loads enter the conversation.
- passive light, controlled gain. daylight does the work that overhead fluorescents usually do, but external shading keeps the summer sun off the glass.
- mechanical sizing follows. the cooling and heating plant is small because the envelope made it possible. the building does not need a chiller to be tolerable.
different climate, same instinct: design the building so the systems can stay quiet.
